Abstract

As Paramedicine continues its evolution into the realms of professionalism, many of the previously accepted ‘norms’ regarding training, education and research are being re-examined. An area of particular interest is that of the development of well defined, evidence-based clinical leadership and how it pertains to Paramedicine as a profession.

Utilising the recent introduction of new leadership groups within the organisations structure, a case study of the Clinical Lead role, and the ongoing development of the specialist on-road mentoring model in St John Ambulance Western Australia will interrogate the importance of a well-defined, evidence-based clinical leadership scaffolding to the future development of a practice-based learning framework and its applicability as a pedagogy for Paramedicine.

This presentation will examine the effectiveness of recognised leadership development models including Communities of Practice, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Leadership and the Coffee and Cases framework and consider their efficacy in the Paramedicine context. The case studies will provide tangible evidence of the use of the models and the discussion will consider challenges, barriers and solutions to their implementation and measure of success.
