Peter’s career in the emergency ambulance sector spans over 35 years. He worked first as a paramedic and then a senior ambulance operational manager in Auckland for a number of years before completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Otago University.

In 1996, he joined London Ambulance Service (LAS) as Director of Operations and was appointed Chief Executive in 2000. LAS is the busiest ambulance service in the world and Peter took the service from being the worst the UK in 1999 to the best by 2007.

During Peter’s tenure in London, he was appointed UK Government Advisor for Ambulance Services. He led the organisation through a number of major incidents, including the tragic London terrorist bombings and the very successful London Olympics in 2012.

Peter returned to New Zealand in 2012 to become Chief Executive of Hato Hone St John, leading an 11,000 strong paid and volunteer workforce that operates in every community across Aotearoa. Over the last few years, Peter has led the organisation through a number of major incidents as well as the global pandemic, while at the same time delivering major transformation at Hato Hone St John.

Presentation Title and Overview: Learnings and leadership through a major crisis

With a career in the emergency ambulance sector spanning more than 35 years, Peter will share his extensive knowledge of how ambulance services prepare for emergency management situations, how they respond in a crisis, and learnings taken forward to improve response for the future. Peter will specifically share his experiences of leading through major incidents such as the Christchurch Mosque attack and the White Island volcanic eruption in New Zealand. Peter will be joined by Chris Harrison, Emergency Capability Manager – Hazardous Area Response for Hato Hone St John, who will share his extensive operational knowledge of these major incidents.

Peter will also share his experience from his time as Chief Executive of the London Ambulance Service during the 7/7 terrorist bombings, and on learnings from other major incidents in the UK.
