Abstract:
Throughout 2024 the SJWA Clinical and Operational excellence team piloted the use of a double ambulance paramedic (AP) vehicle working 7 days per week for university student clinical placements. In gearing up for the pilot the AP’s applied to be included in a dedicated pool to provide Clinical Supervision and create an encouraging supportive learning environment.
The University & Industry vehicle, launched in February 2024, facilitated 322 clinical placements days for Western Australian universities throughout the year. This included 27 State Operating Centre observer shifts for Notre Dame University. Total placement hours of 3,864.
Additionally, placements were facilitated for 17 days Royal Perth Hospital Triage Nurses and 46 placement days were allocated for SJWA, Events, Corporate and Country Volunteer observers.
The on-boarding information for each student set out crew details, crew introduction, location and shift times.
Each shift 1 hour was allocated to the crew members to walk through equipment, safety, duress points and the expectations of the student in terms of work integrated learning. The frame for the AP team was to maximise involvement and learning of the student throughout the student placement days.
The SJWA central team on completion of the placement would issue the student a certificate of recognition, a deidentified list of incidents attended throughout the placement and electronic links to SJWA employment opportunities.
The lightening presentation will aim to share the key ideas and findings from the pilot with a view to encouraging new thinking and continuous improvement pilots in the area of clinical placements.
