Abstract:

In 2022, SJWA reviewed its Clinical Incident Management System (CIMS), and proposed improvements to its design, performance, and resource maintenance. From this a proposal was put forward to design, develop, and implement a dedicated CIMS tailored to the Ambulance setting.

The new CIMS aimed to enhance incident reporting, analysis, response, and learning mechanisms. By providing data specific to the prehospital environment, it enables trend identification learning and improvement, benefiting our frontline teams and enhancing care for our patients.

Collaboration between the project team and staff resulted in a well-tested system, supported by tools and educational sessions for clinical leaders during rollout.

The new CIMS has significantly improved patient safety by aligning with NSQHS Standards, ensuring compliance while fostering a positive safety culture. User feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with regular users highlighting numerous benefits since its implementation.

“The new CIMS allows for a much more streamlined process for clinical incident management. The dashboard allows an easy overview of all incidents and their current progress, and the allocation system allows tasks to be allocated accordingly. The new system allows for the whole process to be viewed on a single page, from notification, to triage, and investigation. This has greatly decreased the administrative burden, and improved the ability for data and trend analysis to allow for more opportunity for quality improvement”- Ciaran Voyce, Clinical Quality Manager

Future work will focus on post implementation activities including additional CIM training; performance evaluation; and the use of data to develop an annual Report.
