Matt Cannon

Matt is the Chief Executive of the National St John Ambulance Service of Papua New Guinea and a Member of the CAA Board of Directors.

Since taking on the role of Chief Executive in 2017, he has been instrumental in expanding and professionalising the emergency ambulance service across PNG.

Matt is a registered nurse and registered paramedic. He joined the NSW Ambulance Service in 2010, and continues to practice as a casual paramedic with NSW Ambulance. Matt’s experience also extends to policy and health administration. He worked for the NSW Ministry of Health and was seconded to the Office of the Minister for Health as the NSW Ambulance liaison officer for the Minister from 2014 to 2015.

His experience is also shared in the academic realm as a casual academic at the University of Sydney, and formerly lectured at Charles Sturt University. Matt’s previous research area focused on the health impacts of mass gatherings and triage.

Matt was recognised for his contribution to emergency ambulance services by being made an Officer of the Order of St John in 2018. In 2023, he was made a Fellow of the Australasian College of Paramedicine in recognition of contributions to paramedicine.

Every few minutes, the National St John Ambulance Service receives a call for help from somewhere in Papua New Guinea.

Handling hundreds of calls daily in a multilingual environment often without formal street addresses presents unique challenges. In this presentation, we will highlight how embracing innovation and technology has enabled us to ensure reliable and sustainable emergency services, meeting the diverse needs of our communities. We will explore the multitude of technologies, including Responder. One CAD, push-to-talk over LTE and VHF, 4G pagers, GoodSAM, and other communication tools.
